A little advance planning opens a lot of doors in Washington. Here are the places to consider, when to think about booking, and where to find the official details.

What to book, and when

As your dates take shape
Start with the hard-to-get visits.
Contact your congressional office about a White House tour up to 90 days ahead. Reserve a Capitol tour once your plans are set; do not count on walk-up space.
About a month ahead
Watch the ticket calendars.
Library of Congress and Washington Monument advance tickets currently open 30 days ahead. The People’s House releases the next month’s passes on a monthly schedule.
Before you head out
Reserve the easy-to-miss passes.
Both the Zoo and Air and Space on the Mall require entry passes, even though admission is free. Recheck hours, restrictions and any service alerts.

The White House

The official public tour visits the State Floor’s public rooms, including the Blue, Red and Green Rooms and the State Dining Room. It is a different experience from the replica Oval Office at The People’s House below.

Booking: the current official request window is 7–90 days ahead through your Member of Congress. Tours are free, but availability and the route can change and a confirmed visit may be canceled.

An interactive alternative

The People’s House

This educational museum near the White House explores the Executive Mansion through immersive exhibits, including a replica Oval Office. A pass here does not include a visit to the actual White House.

Booking: general admission is free, with a suggested donation. Reserve timed passes ahead; limited walk-ups may be available. The next month’s passes currently release on the first business day of the preceding month—check the official calendar for timing.

A guided look inside

U.S. Capitol

Guided tours normally visit the Crypt, Rotunda and National Statuary Hall. The route can change, and the standard tour does not include the House or Senate galleries.

Booking: tours are free and advance reservations are recommended. Same-day passes may be available, but a reservation is the better plan. Your congressional office can also advise on visit options. The Visitor Center is currently open Monday–Saturday.

Architecture worth lingering over

Library of Congress

The Thomas Jefferson Building is an especially beautiful stop for anyone who loves books, art or architecture. Leave time for the building itself as well as its exhibitions.

Booking: free timed-entry tickets are required. They currently release 30 days ahead, with additional same-day tickets at 9 a.m. Eastern. Visitor access is Tuesday–Saturday; check hours and special-event requirements before choosing a date.

Washington from above

Washington Monument

The elevator takes visitors to the 500-foot observation level for views across the capital. The visit involves security screening, an elevator and enclosed spaces; check the park’s accessibility guidance if that affects your plans.

Booking: advance tickets currently release at 10 a.m. Eastern, 30 days ahead, with a $1 reservation fee. Additional tickets release a day ahead. Limited free same-day tickets are distributed at the Monument Lodge from 8:45 a.m.; lines can form early.

Good to know: weather and maintenance can close the monument. Follow the current National Park Service instructions rather than treating any ticket release as guaranteed.

A little time outdoors

Smithsonian’s National Zoo

A good option for animal lovers and families, with habitats including giant pandas. It is a large, hilly site—plan for comfortable shoes, breaks and the weather rather than a quick stop between other plans.

Booking: admission is free, but every guest, including infants, needs an entry pass. Parking is paid and can sell out; reserve ahead if driving.

Getting there: Cleveland Park and Woodley Park are both about half a mile from the main entrance. The Zoo recommends Cleveland Park for an easier approach if mobility is a concern; Woodley Park involves an uphill walk. This does not remove the hills inside the Zoo.

Family & kid-friendly picks

Pick one main outing, then leave room for a snack and a slower afternoon. These are ideas for your time in the area; wedding attendance details remain on Zola.

Air and Space on the National Mall

Historic aircraft and spacecraft, the Wright Flyer and hands-on flight exhibits make this a natural choice for curious kids. Free timed-entry passes are required for every visitor, regardless of age.

Plan a visit & reserve free passes

Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center

Near Dulles in Chantilly, Virginia, two enormous hangars hold aircraft and spacecraft including Space Shuttle Discovery and an SR-71 Blackbird. Admission is free without timed passes; parking is paid. This is a separate location from the museum on the Mall.

National Museum of Natural History

A classic museum stop for a family day on the Mall. Use the official visitor page to choose exhibits, confirm current access and check whether any special experience needs a separate ticket.

A useful museum idea to pair with time near Union Station. Check the current exhibits and family activities on the museum’s own site before setting your itinerary.
